A graduation ceremony, complete with caps and gowns, will be held Sunday at the Union Rescue Mission for 40 homeless men who have completed a one-year drug and alcohol treatment program.
More than 250 family members and friends will be on hand to offer support to the men, many of whom have never participated in a graduation ceremony.
“When I was on drugs, all I remember is telling my kids to go away,” said Hilbert Baeza, a former drug addict who has completed the sobriety program.
“Now I visit them most of the week and on weekends. When they see me coming they yell ‘Daddy’s here! Daddy’s here!’ It’s such a great felling.”
The graduation will be at 3 p.m. at the mission, 545 S. San Pedro St.
