Gam Slam

When architect Jay M. Reynolds decided to design a furniture line, he certainly did his legwork.

Reynolds, who designs residential and commercial buildings, introduced his furniture in March at a trade show. Before starting his own firm, Reynolds worked in the offices of I.M. Pei and Rand Elliot, who helped shape Reynolds’ design style.

Reynolds pays close attention to the legs of a piece, with a taper his personal favorite. “Legs are too often an afterthought in the design process,” says Reynolds, who moved his firm in 1991 to Los Angeles from New York. “I want to create pieces that are integrated in their forms and functions.”

For instance, the vertical cabinet, a popular item in the five-piece collection, has long, lean legs that are deceptively stable, yet they add dimension to the overall look.

The cabinet ($5,300) is made of maple veneer with an etched-glass shelf and has the look of city-plan grids. Three corners open to adjustable shelves, and a slide-out drawer and lighted display area add to its appeal.

Reynolds’ upholstered furnishings are clean and curvaceous, yet relaxed for comfort. The lounge chair ($1,475) is sweeping and dynamic, and the Sherbourne chair ($825) has proportions modeled after the human body.

The pod tables (three sizes, $650, $775 and $925) are playful, with spiky legs that look almost animated.

All of the furnishings in the collection, which are on display on the sixth floor of the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles, can be customized.

Floor Show

The world of Dialogica takes another turn with the introduction of its handmade rug line.

Monique Savarese, who with her husband, Sergio, are the designers and owners of Dialogica, have added the rug line to complement the company’s furniture collection.

The rugs, made of New Zealand wools, are modern with a classic spirit.

They’re available as runners and in rectangular, oval and square shapes. All of the wools have been recolored to ensure that they match the furniture palette.

Nine styles of rugs ($55 per square foot) are in the line, ranging from a basket weave to bordered pieces to those with intricate patterns.
