Hueneme High shortstop and pitcher Jess Sanchez has been selected Channel League player of the year in baseball.

Sanchez, a senior who helped the Vikings to a share of their first league title since 1981, batted .326 and was 4-1 with a 3.89 earned-run average in league play.

Coach honored: Don Strametz, the men’s and women’s track and field coach at Cal State Northridge, has been named Big Sky Conference women’s coach of the year.

Strametz, in his 17th season at Northridge, guided the Matador women to the team title in their first Big Sky championship meet, which was held at Eastern Washington from May 14-17.
