Sun Microsystems Inc. has agreed to pay California $51 million for surplus state land for use as a new research and development campus, state officials said. The sale would be completed in September after entitlements for the property have been obtained from the city of Santa Clara, the officials said. Sun would not disclose the purchase price, but state officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Sun would buy the 82.5 acres in Santa Clara for roughly $51 million. Sun’s proposed research and development campus will include more than 1 million square feet of office space and could accommodate up to 3,600 workers. Sun, based in Mountain View, is a leading provider of hardware, software and services for computer networks.
