George Washington Upsets Carolina

In the end, top-seeded North Carolina couldn’t rely on open shots, and fell to George Washington, 55-46, in the semifinals of the NCAA Division I East Regional on Saturday.

“We had some good looks at the basket, but it goes back to putting the basketball in,” said Marion Jones of North Carolina (29-3), who was held to eight points, 10 below her average.

Tajama Abraham, George Washington’s all-time leading scorer, had 18 points and 12 rebounds as the Colonials (28-5) reached the final eight for the first time.

Notre Dame 87, Alabama 71--Beth Morgan scored a career-high 36 points and the Irish (30-6) had a 22-0 run in the second half to beat the Crimson Tide (25-7).

MIDEAST REGIONAL

Florida 71, Louisiana Tech 57--Murriel Page had 19 points and 13 rebounds, and the Gators (24-8) used a fast start to beat the Techsters (31-4) at West Lafayette, Ind.

Florida didn’t allow a field goal for the first seven minutes.

Old Dominion 62, Louisiana State 49--The Monarchs (32-1) won their 31st consecutive game by overcoming their worst shooting performance of the season (32%) to beat the Tigers (31-4).

MIDWEST REGIONAL

Tennessee 75, Colorado 67--Chamique Holdsclaw scored 14 of her 20 points in the second half to lead the Volunteers (26-10) over the Buffalos (23-9) at Iowa City.

Connecticut 78, Illinois 73--Carla Berube scored scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half for the top-ranked Huskies (33-0) against the Illini (24-8) at Iowa City.

WEST REGIONAL

Stanford 91, Virginia 69--Kate Starbird had 22 points and Jamila Wideman added 19 as the Cardinal (33-3) dominated the Cavaliers (23-8) at Missoula, Mont.

Georgia 66, Vanderbilt 52--The second-seeded Bulldogs (25-5) rallied in the second half to beat the sixth-seeded Commodores (20-11).
