Harris’ Ejection Considered Twofold

Del Harris lasted all of Sunday night on the Laker bench, unlike Friday, when he was kicked out in the fourth quarter of a close game against the Clippers, his first ejection of the season and third as a Laker.

Harris’ intent was largely motivational, hoping it would fire up the Lakers for a final push. Nick Van Exel, for one, said he liked the idea of their coach taking two for the team.

Said Harris on Sunday, smiling: “I know he likes it.”

But the coach was also trying to make a point. He wants to be the one arguing with officials, or at least arguing the most, hoping to be heard by referees over the constant chatter from his players.

“I think our team does too much refereeing,” Harris said, echoing a theme from last season. “We need to do more competing and playing and less referring.

“Referees tell me they are getting tired of hearing it [from players on every team]. I’ve been in the league long enough that refs give me the hints. Let me do it.”
