Deaf Children

* Re “No Longer a Prisoner of Silence,” March 3: Suzi is not alone. Unfortunately, too many hearing parents imprison their deaf children by not understanding that they have no language. They don’t learn English, Spanish or any signed language--nada. Even if not as abusive as Suzi’s parents, some mothers and fathers are guilty of a human rights violation by confusing speech with language. Language is a basic human right.
I hope all deaf people will be allowed to learn language. If they don’t understand what ears and mouths are doing, let them use their eyes and hands!
