From Times Wire Reports
Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori visited the former stronghold of a guerrilla movement to show he is winning the war against terrorism despite a 4-week-old hostage standoff. Fujimori inspected a village near Ayacucho, the city that once was controlled by Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) rebels. Meanwhile, witnesses said three gunshots were fired into the air at the Japanese ambassador’s home in Lima, where Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement rebels are holding 74 hostages. There was no explanation or reports of injuries.
