China Made for Mao Sells for $1 Million

Eighty-seven pieces of porcelain made for the late Communist Party leader Mao Tse-tung during the Cultural Revolution drew $1 million at auction. All but one piece--a bowl--was bought by a follower of Mao who now heads a government futures trading firm. The collection--teacups, bowls, wine vessels and other pieces in white porcelain dappled with pink plum and peach blossoms--was ordered by aides seeking to gain Mao’s favor. About 1,000 pieces were produced in 1975, from which two sets of 138 pieces were selected for Mao. The pieces given to him, however, were not included in the sale: They are likely considered by the government as too valuable to be sold.
