NONCONFERENCE
* PEPPERDINE at WEBER STATE
Time--6 PST. Radio--KWNK (670).
1995-96 records--Pepperdine 10-18, Weber State 20-10.
Coach Lorenzo Romar begins his first season at Pepperdine with a team short on numbers and height. The Waves have only nine scholarship players available after freshman forward Kelvin Gibbs, a starting candidate, was declared academically ineligible this week by the NCAA clearing house. Pepperdine has appealed the decision. The tallest starter is 6-foot-8 Bryan Hill, who scored 25 points to lead Pepperdine over Weber State, 99-88, last season in Malibu. The Waves’ strength is their guards, led by Marques Johnson and R.J. Powell. They will be tested by Weber State, which led the nation in three-point shooting percentage (42.5%) last season. Swingman Ryan Cuff, the Wildcats’ only returning starter and top outside shooter, had back surgery in September but is playing again, albeit not at 100%.
