El Camino Real High School may reign as the unofficial victor of the Super Quiz in the Los Angeles city schools’ annual Academic Decathlon, but it wasn’t the only Valley high school to score impressively in the event.
Four other high schools in the Valley rank in the top 10 of unofficial winners in the Super Quiz. Fifty-nine schools competed in the Academic Decathlon, which tests students’ knowledge of myriad subjects.
The Super Quiz was the final event in a daylong competition during which students endured hours of exams that tested their brain power with essay writing, speeches and multiple-choice questions. The theme of this year’s academic decathlon was computers and culture.
El Camino’s decathlon team scored 86 out of a possible 90 points in the fast-paced Super Quiz portion. Taft High School tied three other schools for fifth place with 78 points. Van Nuys High School scored 75 points for sixth place. Chatsworth High was eighth with 73 points and Canoga Park High School tied for ninth place with 72 points.
Final results of the district’s decathlon will be announced Nov. 26 at the district’s annual banquet. The winner of the decathlon, and any other school that scored higher than 47,000 points, will advance to the state competition at Cal Poly Pomona in March.
