Grayes Runs for 249 Yards in Troy’s Win Over Sonora

FULLERTON — Troy running back Kyion Grayes rushed for 249 yards, scored three touchdowns and set a school record for touchdowns scored in a season as the Warriors defeated Sonora, 41-24.

Troy (6-4 overall, 4-1) clinched a tie for first place in the Freeway League. Sonora finished 2-8, 1-4.

Midway through the first quarter, Steve Muther threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to J.D. Lawrence to give Troy a 7-0 lead.

Sonora cut the lead to 7-3 when Chris Rico kicked a 41-yard field goal with 4:49 left in the first quarter.

Grayes scored his first touchdown with 1:01 left in the quarter on a one-yard run. Then he bolted for an 84-yard touchdown run 2 1/2 minutes into the second quarter as the Warriors built a 21-3 lead.

With 1:40 left in the half, Lawrence fielded a Rico punt on one hop then ran 95 yards for a touchdown to give Troy a 28-3 halftime lead.

Grayes broke the school record when he scored on a 70-yard run with 7:38 left in the third quarter. The extra point was missed and the score was 34-3.

Grayes has scored 19 touchdowns this season.

Sonora scored a twice in a span of 2:15 in the fourth quarter to make the score 34-17. First, Aaron Winterswyk caught a nine-yard pass from Mario Caldera 14 seconds into the quarter.

Then Mike Hamabe ran in from two yards with 9:31 left in the game.

Jason Ferren scored a four-yard touchdown run with a minute left to play to make the score 41-17.
