Gomez Leads Anaheim Past Brea Olinda, 40-18

BREA — Luis Gomez threw five touchdown passes to five receivers in leading Anaheim to a 40-18 victory over Brea Olinda Friday night. The victory gave the Colonists the co-championship in the Orange League with Valencia.
Anaheim (5-5, 4-1 in league) will be the league’s No. 2 representative in the Division V playoffs because it lost to Valencia.
Gomez got 60 of his 290 passing yards on the Colonists’ opening series, including a crucial eight-yard completion to Jesus Acevedo on fourth down, to set up a five-yard scoring run by Jose Rodriguez.
Anaheim increased its lead to 14-0 when Gomez completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Acevedo on fourth down early in the second quarter.
Scott Davis got Brea Olinda (4-6, 2-3) on the scoreboard with a 43-yard field goal with 6 minutes 1 second left in the second quarter.
The Colonists put together an 86-yard drive, capped when Jesse Vasquez caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Gomez with 1:10 left in the half.
Brea Olinda cut the Anaheim lead to 21-10 when Scott Lieng scored from the eight with 7:53 left in he third quarter.
Anaheim followed another fourth-down conversion with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Gomez to Jimmy Gorman with 1:53 left in the third quarter.
The Wildcats pulled within 10 with 10:31 left in the game when Lieng scored from the six and Matt Kalcevich hit Eric Albrecht with a two-point conversion pass.
Anaheim’s final two touchdown passes wrapped up the victory. Gomez hit Nick Herrera with a 23-yard scoring pass and Rodriguez with a 28-yarder.
