Four-Star Films : ‘Shadow Of A Doubt’

Alfred Hitchcock always called this small-town, bucolic 1943 chiller his own personal favorite; it’s the kind of mix of sunny complacency and chilly pathology that most deeply appealed to him. Charming Uncle Charlie (Jospeh Cotten, pictured, with Teresa Wright), an ice-cold Bluebeard and Merry Widow murderer, visits his country cousins in Santa Rosa, including his adoring niece, also called Charlie and gradually plunges them all into a vortex of murder and menace. The result is a masterpiece with a screenplay by Thornton Wilder, Sally Benson and Alma Reville (Mrs. Hitchcock). Also starring Hume Cronyn, Henry Travers, Patricia Collinge and MacDonald Carey (Disney early Saturday at 1:15 a.m.).
