Liberty Christian’s softball team won a coin flip and will be the Academy League’s first-place representative in the Southern Section playoffs. Liberty Christian, in Division VI, tied with St. Margaret’s for first place with a 9-1 record.
The section’s playoff pairings will be released Monday.

The Southern California College women’s basketball team announced the signing of two players this week: Tammy Vavken, who averaged 17 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists for San Jose Valley Christian and Rebekah Thorne, a guard from College of the Siskiyous.

Concordia sports information director Amanda Saltin has announced her resignation, effective June 28. Saltin, who had been with the school for six years, is moving to Atlanta.

Chris Yakura, a junior second baseman at Westmont College, and T.J. Alvarez, a junior catcher at Biola, were first-team All-Golden State Athletic Conference selections in baseball. Yakura played at Marina High and Orange Coast. Alvarez played at Trabuco Hills.

The Irvine High boys’ soccer program is seeking opponents for nonleague games to fill out its 1996-97 schedule. Interested schools should contact Athletic Director Rick Curtis at 552-4211, Ext. 43.
