About 70 police dogs and their handlers will compete Saturday in the 10th annual Police Dog Competition in Redondo Beach.
Patrol dogs and canines who work the narcotics detail will compete in a series of events that test their skills. In the search phase, canines will have to sniff out a person hiding in a box. In the agility phase, dogs will be tested on their movement skills by walking up a ramp in addition to other drills. The dogs also will be tested on obedience.
Law enforcement agencies from San Diego to Las Vegas will participate in the daylong competition. South Bay departments participating in the event include Hawthorne and Manhattan Beach.
The event is free and open to the public and people who attend can talk with the handlers, pet their dogs and purchase canine equipment.
The competition begins at 8 a.m. on the football field at Redondo Union High School.
