Lisa Marlowe’s “Red-Rock Victorian” (Weekend Escape, Jan. 15) left this reader in a state of jaw-dropping astonishment. That The Times apparently does not mind wasting $497.01 on a trip to Bisbee, Ariz., even for three people, should invite an investigation by the Budget Police. I endured 22 months at nearby Ft. Huachuca, and I know whereof I speak. Bisbee is located in one of the most eerily desolate parts of the continental United States. Bisbee might be worth two or three hours’ exploration time while on your way to a worthier destination. The Times would have to pay me $497.01 to go back.

The one and only reason to take a trip to Bisbee is to see the open pit mine and to ride a mine train down into an underground copper mine. The tours are bargain priced and conducted by ex-miners. Visitors don yellow slickers and miner’s helmets. I will never lose the memory of our family, from grandparents to kids, in miner’s clothes, laughing our way underground. Disney could never top this adventure and we learned things too!
