Stockton Foils a Big Rally by Portland

John Stockton made five of six free throws in the final 1:17 Wednesday to enable the Utah Jazz to withstand a furious Portland rally and defeat the Trail Blazers, 98-94, at Portland.
Utah had a 23-point lead early in the fourth quarter.
Karl Malone scored 28 for Utah, but was 0 for 7 from the field in the fourth quarter. Clifford Robinson scored 33 for the Trail Blazers, 20 in the second half.

The Phoenix Suns shot 64% from the field and routed the Atlanta Hawks, 120-84, at Atlanta, the Hawks’ worst loss since a 135-96 defeat to the Lakers nearly three years ago. . . . Terrell Brandon, the smallest player on the court at 5-11, scored 23 points and blocked a career-high five shots to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to an 81-71 triumph over the Milwaukee Bucks at Cleveland. . . . Todd Day scored 24 points as the Boston Celtics rolled to their most lopsided victory of the season, a 131-98 win over the Vancouver Grizzlies at Boston.
