UCLA Choice of Coach Was Not Earthshaking, but Causes Aftershocks

As if a riot, an earthquake and a chronic five-year recession weren’t enough, now comes our region’s latest disaster--Bob Toledo as head football coach at UCLA.

All credit to Pete Dalis for making an honorable effort to land a proven, quality coach. The fact that one candidate brought back unpleasant memories of Larry Brown and another proved to be a provincial control freak wasn’t Pete’s fault.
Rick Neuheisel, of course, was always pie in the sky, thanks to Terry Donahue’s last blunder. Losing Rick will be Terry’s ultimate legacy.
Those of us who wanted Donahue gone are skeptical of Bob Toledo--any connection with Terry is a red flag. He is an unknown quantity. But the players are there. As they always have been.

Thank you, Terry Donahue. Your pathetic record of mediocrity will live on with the hiring of Bob Toledo. Donahue failed to promote Rick Neuheisel to offensive coordinator two years ago because he was afraid the Bruin faithful would eventually push him aside in favor of Neuheisel. Instead, he opted for Toledo. It’s aggravating.

Chancellor Young: The next time UCLA experiences a major coaching vacancy, you might first consider taking applications for the athletic director position.
