LOS ANGELES : DWP, Other Utilities Agree to Cut Harmful Emissions

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and several other electric utilities signed an agreement in Washington Tuesday to make a commitmentto reduce gas emissions that cause global warming.
The Climate Challenge Participation Accord is a voluntary effort by the U.S. Department of Energy and the electric utility industry to reduce the harmful emissions.
“In signing this agreement, DWP will reduce cumulative emissions by 7 million tons by the turn of the century,” said assistant general manager Eldon Cotton.
The DWP’s commitments include phasing out use of fuel oil, expanding its electric vehicle fleet, supporting electric vehicle and public transit projects, and promoting the use of electrically powered lawn mowers, energy efficiency and conservation and reforestation programs.
To date, more than 800 utilities nationwide have indicated their willingness to participate in the Climate Challenge Program and will sign the accord later.
