Four-Star Films : ‘Rebel Without a Cause’

Unless you were in high school or college when this classic of misunderstood youth was released in 1955, it may well be hard to comprehend James Dean’s impact upon young people--who really did want to be understood by their elders. Yet the electrifying sense of recognition we experienced in seeing Dean in this legendary Nicholas Ray film apparently has not diminished all that much for successor generations. And that is something that also could be said about Dean’s appearances in his two other films, “Giant” and “East of Eden.” With Natalie Wood (pictured) and Sal Mineo (TNT Tuesday at 5 p.m.).
