Crime by the Numbers : NEW FBI REPORT DETAILS CRIME IN VALLEY REGION
- Share via
The crime rate dropped across the nation in the first half of 1994, and Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley-area cities were part of the trend.
Citywide, 378 homicides were reported during the first six months of this year, contrasted with 532 during the same period in 1993. For all eight crimes covered in a recent FBI survey, the decrease was 13%, surpassing an average 6% drop for U.S. cities of more than 1 million residents.
In Lancaster, there were 12.3% fewer crimes; in Santa Clarita, 3.7% fewer crimes, and in Glendale, 8.8% fewer crimes. Overall, crime reported to the nation’s law enforcement agencies in cities of more than 100,000 residents was down 3% for the first half of this year.
But how frequently do crimes occur in cities in the San Fernando Valley region? The rates vary. In another FBI study released this month, this one assessing crimes in 1993, Los Angeles logged 8,873 crimes per 100,000 people. By contrast, suburban Santa Clarita had 3,253 crimes per 100,000 residents that year.
