WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary William J. Perry announced Wednesday that U.S. military reserve and National Guard positions will be cut by 39,900 next year to a total of 996,100.
Perry said some troops will be able to transfer to other units near their homes. The reduction is part of post-Cold War defense cuts that also aim to trim regular full-time military forces to 1.4 million.
