Costa Mesa should know by December whether it will become a “Tree U.S.A.” city.
The designation is bestowed by the National Arbor Foundation to cities that work to beautify their communities with trees.
The city is home to a variety of trees, including Canary Island pines, American sweet gums, Australian willows, magnolias and aristocrat pear trees. The city also wants to add palm trees along Newport Boulevard, to mirror those planted near Triangle Square.
South Coast Plaza is home to a well-known collection of palms.
More than 20,000 trees have been planted in the city in recent years.

State Sen. Rob Hurtt (R-Garden Grove) will talk about how government decisions affect the business community at the Industrial Round Table meeting.
The meeting begins at 11:45 a.m. at the Community Meeting Center, 11300 Stanford Ave. in Garden Grove. It is part of the ongoing dialogue between public officials and business people on how to improve the local business climate.
The cost, including lunch, is $20.
