ALHAMBRA : Chinese Americans Warned of Work Permit Swindler

Los Angeles City Atty. James Hahn warned the Chinese American community Wednesday that a convicted swindler who just served time in jail for peddling bogus work permits is at it again.
Lo-Li V. Gregor, 48, was incarcerated this year for defrauding 14 people. But immigration officials discovered that she has resumed advertising in local Chinese-language newspapers to sell the phony documents.
Investigators said they believe Gregor has resumed her business in office buildings on West Mission Road in Alhambra and Wilshire Boulevard in Koreatown.
According to officials, the Alhambra con artist is targeting people with passports from Taiwan and Hong Kong. In the newspaper ads, she offers “reliable” and “legal” U.S. work permits.
In January, Municipal Judge Thomas L. Willhite sentenced her to a year in jail, placed her on five years probation and ordered her not to engage in any immigration activities during that time.
In that case, Gregor was convicted on 43 criminal counts of grand theft, making false and misleading statements, illegally engaging in immigration consulting and other business misconduct. She was released after serving four months in jail.
