Knott’s to the Rescue: When a radio station promotion at Disneyland resulted in a throng of visitors who jammed the streets around the park at the peak of morning rush hour on Halloween, Knott’s Berry Farm pitched in to salvage the day for many park-goers.
The KIIS-FM promotion offered a chance for a free day at Disneyland for listeners who showed up Halloween morning in costume. Thousands took up the offer--so many that the Santa Ana Freeway and some streets were gridlocked. (One local motel manager reported that it took him an hour to move a single block on Katella Avenue in Anaheim.)
A Disneyland spokesman acknowledged that carloads of KIIS fans were turned away because they could not reach the Magic Kingdom in time.
About 500 of the costumed mob decided to try Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park instead. Not only did Knott’s waive its customary rule against allowing guests to wear costumes into the park, it gave the fun seekers a special low rate of $15.95 admission for adults.
A throng of goblins and ghouls wasn’t all that unusual at Knott’s. The park dresses hundreds of its own workers in costumes every year for its Halloween Haunt.
