NORWALK : Ex-Convict Guilty in Beating of Man, 72, Who Later Died

An ex-convict was convicted Wednesday of elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the beating of a 72-year-old Navy veteran of World War II who died after the assault.
Prosecutors will seek the maximum term of nine years in prison when Marcos Valentine Ramos, 47, is sentenced Nov. 17, according to the district attorney’s office.
A Norwalk Superior Court jury convicted Ramos of the assault on Clyde Kennedy, who was severely beaten in the patio of his modest trailer court home in Cudahy.
Before he died, Kennedy told relatives that Ramos--who has served several prison terms, mostly for burglary--demanded money and then punched, kicked and beat the elderly man with a cane.
Kennedy, who was decorated for service in the South Pacific, was recovering from cancer of the larynx and was in frail physical condition. He died Dec. 21 after being treated for the beating and then contracting pneumonia. The coroner’s office initially listed the death as homicide, but subsequently found that Kennedy died of natural causes.
