FRESNO — Jerome Oliver rushed for 220 yards and scored two touchdowns Saturday night to lead Fresno State to a 24-14 victory over Oregon State.
Oliver, replacing injured tailback Michael Pittman, made his first collegiate start and set a Fresno State record with 37 carries, breaking the old mark of 34 shared by three others. The 220 yards was third-best in school history.
Fresno State (2-2), which has won its last 12 home games, took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a one-yard run by Sal Mejico. Oliver set up the score with a 27-yard run.
Oregon State (1-2) had two scoring chances in the second quarter but lost the ball on fumbles deep in Fresno State territory both times.
Sophomore Richie Donati replaced ineffective starter Adrian Claiborne at quarterback to start the second half for Fresno State and guided the Bulldogs to 10 third-quarter points.
