CRENSHAW : Kiwanis Will Honor Activist Celes King

The Kiwanis Club of Angeles Mesa is holding a reception Saturday for Celes King III to celebrate the bail bondsman’s 50 years as a community leader and civil rights activist.
For 30 years, King, 70, has owned a bail bond agency at 1528 W. Martin Luther King Blvd. that has also served as the operation site for a number of organizations he has either founded or helped to launch. Among them are the state Congress of Racial Equality and the Martin Luther King Kingdom Day Parade.
King co-founded the Brotherhood Crusade in Los Angeles and was instrumental in changing the name of Santa Barbara Plaza to King Boulevard. He also served in the military as a state reserve brigadier general, and was an officer in the Tuskegee Airmen, an all-black unit of the U.S. Air Force.
King was sidelined in April after suffering serious injuries during a robbery and assault in the Mid-City area, but has since recovered.
The anniversary event starts at 7 p.m. at the Beverly Hills Country Club, 3084 Motor Ave. Cost is $50. Information: (213) 298-8777.
