GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Woodbridge Knocks Off Edison on a Quiet Night for Philman

Edison’s Marie Philman was coming off a 41-point, 19-rebound performance, so Woodbridge Coach Eric Bangs decided to do the only thing he could think of: He would not let her touch the ball.
Philman, who has had games of 42, 41 and 39 points this season, attempted only three shots as Woodbridge beat Edison, 70-36, to advance to the final of the Cypress tournament at 7:30 tonight.
Philman was three of three from the floor and finished with 12 points and three rebounds before fouling out with 2 minutes 44 seconds left in the third quarter. By then, the Chargers trailed, 52-21.
“They have some big players and I got in foul trouble early and I was unable to play my game,” Philman said. “I wasn’t able to take the shots I normally take.”
Angela Burgess, a 6-foot-4 center, took the middle of the key and guards Jamie Oenning and Tami Weaver hustled at the top of a 2-3 zone that prevented Philman from getting into her game.
Burgess’ height was too much for Edison and she scored 23 points.
Woodbridge (6-0) had four players in double figures: Erin Stovall (13), Melanie Pearson (11) and Oenning (10).
“If we’re going to get beat,” Edison Coach Philip Abraham said, “it’s going to have to be to a top program like Woodbridge. I can handle losing to a team like Woodbridge. After Brea, they’re the best team in the county.”
The Chargers (5-1) converted 11 of 45 shots (24%).
“Woodbridge’s pressure and size had a lot do do with our shooting percentage,” Abraham said. “We never got in sync.”
Edison plays Fountain Valley in the third-place game at 6 p.m. tonight.
