Doubts About Bid

* I couldn’t help but laugh when I read City Manager Kevin Murphy’s explanation of the lowest bid awarded for a construction contract of a new fire station here in Newport Beach, stating: “It is an unbelievable bid,” and that city officials are comfortable with the bid. (“City to Save on Cost of New Fire Station,” Aug. 10.)
Was not the renovation and new construction of Orange County’s John Wayne Airport awarded to a low bid? How about the infamous gas pipeline project on East Coast Highway in Corona del Mar--was not that a low bid? My hope is that this is an unbelievable low bid--and not a low bid that is unbelievable. We will be watching to see just how “unbelievable” this low bid will be.
