Senate Confirms Woman as Air Force Secretary

WASHINGTON — The Senate has approved President Clinton’s nomination of Sheila Widnall as secretary of the Air Force, making her the first woman to head a branch of the U.S. armed services. The 55-year-old aeronautical engineer and associate provost at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was confirmed Thursday by voice vote.
