A United Farm Workers flag was draped over the coffin of Father Luis Olivares at his funeral at San Gabriel Mission.
Politicized by UFW causes, Olivares in 1985 declared La Placita church, near Olvera Street, a sanctuary for Central American refugees and struggled on behalf of undocumented immigrants.
The popular priest was 59 when he died March 19 from complications of AIDS, which he had contracted from a blood transfusion in El Salvador.
