Robert Vargus of Camarillo, assistant superintendent for the city of Camarillo water department, died from a stroke Wednesday, city officials said. He was 59.
Vargus was vacationing in Nevada when he suffered the stroke.
Vargus began his career in Camarillo in 1962 with the Ventura County Waterworks District No. 5, which became the Camarillo water department when the city incorporated in 1964, said John Elwell, director of community services. Named assistant superintendent in 1974, Vargus was the city’s longest-serving employee, he said.
“Bob has always been a team player,” Elwell said. “He was loyal to the city and would do anything to make the city look good.”
Elwell said the flag at Camarillo City Hall will be flown at half-mast.
Survivors include his wife, Irene, and daughter Lisa, both of Camarillo, and son Tom of Santa Paula. Funeral plans are not final.
