Monterey Park : Anti-Casino Group Formed
An anti-casino coalition has formed in Monterey Park, its leaders announced this week.
The group, Citizens Against Casino Gambling, has about 30 members, said acting chairman Irving Willner. Members include residents, elected officials, clergy, and Asian and Latino community leaders.
The group formed to monitor attempts by developers to bring gambling clubs into the city, Willner said.
In February, about 700 people attended a City Council hearing on a resolution to discourage card clubs. The resolution was aimed at BCTC Development, which had been considering a proposal to submit plans for a card club in Monterey Park.
Under pressure, the developers dropped their pursuit of plans but did not rule out future efforts.
