COLLEGE BASEBALL : Fullerton Walks Tall in Big West

Cal State Fullerton appears as if it might walk away with the Big West Conference championship.

The Titans, ranked No. 3 by Baseball America, are 14-1 in the Big West after sweeping a three-game series at Nevada Las Vegas.

Sophomore right-hander Mike Parisi improved to 7-0 this season with a 5-3 victory in the series opener Thursday. The Titans collected 17 hits and a conference-record 16 walks in a 22-4 victory, then finished the sweep with 14 hits and 11 walks in a 13-9 victory Saturday.

Cal State Long Beach moved into second place in the Big West at 8-4 by sweeping three games against San Jose State (6-6). Long Beach right-hander Daniel Choi improved his record to 10-1 by pitching eight innings during an 8-4 victory Friday night. Fullerton plays host to Long Beach this weekend. . . . . . . First-place in the Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division will be at stake this weekend when ninth-ranked USC plays host to 12th-ranked Arizona State in a three-game series. Dan Hubbs earned his 14th save as USC improved its conference record to 12-9 by defeating Stanford, 6-4, Saturday, salvaging the final game of a three-game series. Arizona State (10-8) moved into second place by winning three of four against California (8-10). UCLA, ranked 13th, is 7-8 after losing two of three against Arizona (11-10). Ryan McGuire hit his 15th home run for the Bruins, who play host to Stanford (6-9) this weekend. . . . Cal State Northridge won two of three against San Diego State in the Western Athletic Conference. Northridge is 8-7 in the West division. Hawaii leads the division at 5-3. . . . West Coast Conference teams were idle.
