Euthanasia

Re “Making an Appointment to Die” (March 14), I would like to applaud the Netherlands’ government for its civilized and compassionate stance on this ever so sensitive issue of euthanasia.
Has anyone determined the rationale for prolonging a terminally ill patient’s suffering? Why are doctors so hung up on saving a life no matter the cost physically, emotionally and/or financially on a patient and his family? We live in a society where we treat our ailing animals more humanely than we treat our own race.
God forbid I should ever be in such a state of ill health; save your medical technology and your willingness to spend inexhaustible amounts of money extending my agony and supply me instead with a one-way ticket to the Netherlands.
