COMPTON : College Faculty Votes No Confidence in President

The Compton Community College faculty has issued a strong vote of no confidence against embattled President Warren A. Washington and other campus administrators, under fire since an audit found that hundreds of thousands of federal dollars had been misspent at the college since 1989.

This is the second such declaration on campus since the audit was released last month. Two weeks ago, the Academic Senate, which represents the faculty, voted 13 to 2 against the administration and called on Washington to step down. In the latest vote, 54 of the 75 full-time faculty members returned ballots, school officials said. Of those, 36 voted no confidence.

Washington has refused to resign, and has taken no action against four administrators who were responsible for the federally funded expenditures. The four have been on paid leave since October. Federal officials have suspended about $400,000 in funds requested by the college this year, and said the college will be required to repay the misspent money.
