PREP PREVIEW 1993: GOLF : Irvine
Coach: Rick Curtis (fourth year)
1992: 14-4, 8-2; finished second in South Coast League; finished fourth in Southern Section Southern Regional.
Key returners: Rick Redding, Sr., averaged 75; Michael Woodroof, Sr., averaged 76; Brannon Rees, Sr., averaged 78; Andy Moore, Jr.
Key newcomers: Scott DePonte, Sr., transfer from Esperanza; John Kim, Jr.; Allen Gray, Jr.; Dan Irwin, Fr.
Outlook: After laboring for years in the South Coast League, long one of the best golf leagues in Orange County, the Vaqueros have moved to the Sea View League, which now shows signs of becoming a powerhouse with the addition of Irvine and Santa Margarita to go with a resurgent Corona del Mar. Irvine, which has reached the Southern Section team finals only once (in 1979), came within one spot last year. Despite the loss of top player J.J. White to graduation, Curtis is confident his team will be at least as good. “I think experience is the big key for us,” Curtis said. “We’ve got those three seniors returning, and the kids we have now are really into golf. When I first started as coach, the kids seemed to be there just to come out.”
