Mater Dei

Coach: Karyn Rice (first year)
1992: 19-2-1, 8-0 in league; advanced to 5-A Southern Section semifinals, where Monarchs lost to Simi Valley; won Angeles League.
Key returners: Jennifer Clark, Sr., pitcher, struck out 63 in the 72 innings she pitched, also batted .285 and drove in six runs; Veronica Saldivar, Sr., DH/first base, batted .208 and had five RBIs; Marie O’Beck, Sr., first base, hit .265, will pitch some. All three were first-team CIF selections; Candace Kollen, Jr., third baseman, batted .242 last year.
Key newcomers: Colleen Boddy, Fr., pitcher, will back up to Clark and O’Beck; Lisa Tully, Fr., infield; Margaret Hollis, Fr., catcher.
Outlook: Although nine returners grace its roster, new is the buzzword for Mater Dei, who must adjust to a new coach in Rice, a 1986 graduate who played softball at Creighton and was a graduate assistant at Long Beach State last year. Also new to the Monarchs--a former Angelus League member--is the South Coast League. They must adjust to loss of Jennifer Cline, the 1992 league MVP, now a catcher at Washington, and Notre Dame pitcher Terri Kobata.
