Drought and Rainstorms

Your article “Storm Debris Turns Beach Into a Dump” (Jan. 21) focuses on a problem that besieges our beaches every time it rains. Unfortunately, our beaches and ocean are “the dump” at the end of a storm drain system that carries all of our storm water along with everything on the streets straight to the ocean without any treatment.
Citizens of the greater Los Angeles area are responsible for this problem. Every time an individual dumps anything into the street it ends up on the beach. A small effort made by every person can have a significant effect on the quality of beaches.
We would all be better served if more funds went toward keeping trash out of the gutters and storm drain system rather than the County Board of Supervisors deciding to spend a quarter-million dollars on cleanup each time we have a major rain.
