BONN : Cabinet Reshuffle

German Chancellor Helmut Kohl is expected to announce a major mid-term Cabinet shuffle this week in an apparent effort to shore up confidence in his center-right coalition. How many posts might be affected remained unclear.
The conservative Christian Democrat is under growing pressure both at home and abroad to resolve several important issues beleaguering the country since East and West Germany united in 1990.
Since then, Kohl’s approval ratings have plummeted amid rising violence directed against foreigners, economic problems and the Bonn government’s failure to decide on constitutional changes that would toughen asylum laws and permit deployment of German troops with U.N. forces outside the NATO theater.
