Bad News: Because of budget shortfalls, Long Beach-based public radio station KLON-FM (88.1) has laid off six employees, virtually decimating its news department. “It really wasn’t anything that happened, it was grants that didn’t come in,” said KLON general manager Rick Lewis, who resigned following the firings. KLON--whose program format is almost entirely jazz--has been losing money since it dropped “Calnet,” a statewide news service, patterned after National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.” The jazz format at the station will remain intact.
