CHESS RESULTS : Fischer Wins Third Straight Against Spassky
- Share via
Bobby Fischer scored his third straight win Wednesday in the ninth game of his chess match with Boris Spassky--a speedy 21-move victory that came in the shortest game of the match.
Fischer now holds a 4-2 lead in the “revenge match of the century” in Sveti Stefan, Yugoslavia.
For the first time in this match, Fischer, playing white, chose the exchange variation of the Ruy Lopez, a favorite opening that he used with great success in the 1960s. On move 17, Fischer introduced a new idea. Spassky’s reply was a serious mistake, and he resigned four moves later. The game lasted only three hours and 10 minutes.
Spassky has lost two games in a row because of blunders. He admitted that he has had kidney problems and back pains that interfere with his concentration. But he has not yet asked to postpone a game.
The tenth game is scheduled for today. The match will continue until one player wins 10 games. The match will shift to Belgrade after either player reaches five wins.
