ANTELOPE VALLEY : Businesses Recruited for Telecommuting

The Los Angeles County government this week began recruiting businesses to use the county’s first public-private telecommuting center, scheduled to open Dec. 1 in the Antelope Valley.
The center will provide desk space and computers for employees who would normally commute out of the valley to work. To encourage employers to allow their workers to try the new center, the service will be free for the first year.
Up to 100 people will be able to work at the center, communicating with their offices through computer messages, telephone calls and facsimile machines. Many are expected to use the center only a day or two each week.
The three-year pilot program, which will cost $495,000 to set up and $100,000 a year to operate, is being financed by private companies and government grants.
The county estimates that about 4,000 county employees live in the Antelope Valley and more than 40,000 other valley residents commute to offices in the San Fernando Valley or downtown Los Angeles.
