Humberto Gonzalez, the light-flyweight champion from Mexico City, will fight Thailand’s Napa Kiatwanchai tonight in a World Boxing Council title match at the Forum.
Gonzalez is 7-1 in championship fights, 33-1 overall and has 25 knockouts. Kiatwanchai won a decision over the Philippines’ Rolando Pasqua, who upset Gonzalez at the Forum 20 months ago.
Kiatwanchai (15-2-1) is moving up from boxing’s lightest weight class, strawweight, 105 pounds. The light-flyweight limit is 108 pounds. Gonzalez was knocked out during the sixth round by Pasqua in a Forum upset, but regained his championship last June by winning a decision over Melchor Cob Castro.
Castro is also on tonight’s card. In a 10-rounder, the Mexican will fight Richard Clarke of Jamaica. And Los Angeles heavyweight Dave Dixon will fight Mike White of LaGrange, N.C. Both are 12-2.
In his last defense, in Seoul, Gonzalez was behind on all three scorecards entering the 12th round against Kim Kwang-Sun. But he knocked Kim down twice during the last round and the referee stopped the fight.
