TUSTIN — The City Council approved plans last week for a 16,000-square-foot gymnasium in Columbus Tustin Park.
Construction of the gymnasium, budgeted at $2.5 million, is scheduled to begin in December. Officials said they hope the gym will be completed in eight to 12 months.
The gymnasium is the final phase of a master plan begun by the city almost a decade ago. The first phase included building playing fields on Columbus Tustin Park and on adjoining land. These were completed in 1985.
The second phase included the addition of a storm drain in the park and 184 parking spaces, completed in April, 1992.
The gym, which will be built in the northeastern area of the park, will have a basketball court with seating for 200 people, as well as partitions that can divide the gym into volleyball courts and other playing areas.
The facility will also have classrooms for dance, gymnastics or aerobics. Design plans include a clear ceiling, wood floors and air conditioning.
