FROM THE MOUNTAINS

I was saddened reading “Dark Hearts, Wild Things” (by Rick Bass, Aug. 2). The plight of the disappearing wilderness seems to be a recurring nightmare on a global scale. It surely cannot be such a hard idea to grasp that there is only one earth, one sky and one sea, and that each of us is accountable for our actions that directly and indirectly affect every living thing. Without trees, not only will we lose the creatures and plants that inhabit our forests but we also will ultimately come face to face with our own destruction.
