THE AFTERMATH OF HURRICANE INIKI : Real Drama Traps Spielberg, Actors
- Share via
Director Steven Spielberg and a cast of Hollywood stars were trapped on Kauai when Hurricane Iniki roared through the scenic Hawaiian island, interrupting the final day of filming for his new movie, “Jurassic Park.”
Spielberg and the film’s stars--Richard Attenborough, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum--rode out the storm Friday, huddled together in a ballroom at the Westin Kauai Hotel, associate producer Lata Ryan said Saturday.
Hawaiian civil defense officials said the hurricane, the worst to hit the island chain this century, devastated Kauai, destroying many homes, blowing roofs off buildings and flooding roads.
“Everybody’s safe at the hotel,” Ryan said in an interview. “They were all packed into a concrete safe area where they had enough supplies to last them for 18 hours.”
Ryan denied news reports that Spielberg was missing on the island, but she acknowledged that no one at his Amblin Entertainment production company had made direct contact with him because the storm knocked out communications.
