The state Employment Training Panel will spend $1 million to upgrade training for more than 1,000 supermarket employees from riot-damaged areas. The program will allow employees of Food 4 Less Supermarkets to improve their skills in math, customer service and management, and teach them to use sophisticated computer equipment installed in many of the stores since the riots.
Food 4 Less--which owns Boys, Alpha Beta, Viva and Bella markets--is one of the largest supermarket chains in Southern California and one of the few with many inner-city outlets. The chain was hit hard during the riots, with 44 stores damaged and three destroyed.
Forty of the stores have since reopened and the company has donated $1.5 million in food to residents and provided 20,000 meals to emergency personnel on hand to help quell the riots.
